Superior Dome at NMU – Marquette Michigan Attractions
The Superior Dome, nicknamed “Yooper Dome”, is known as the world’s largest wooden-dome stadium and is located on the campus of Northern Michigan University in Marquette, MI. Home to the NMU Wildcats football team, and host to various campus and community events, the Superior Dome encompasses over 5 acres under its roof.
The football field is made of state-of-the-art field turf and accommodates the University’s football, field hockey, and soccer tournaments. The stadium also hosts basketball, volleyball, tennis, and track events as well as trade shows, conventions, conferences, banquets, and the Upper Peninsula “Band Day” competition/exhibition. The Dome seats eight thousand and can hold twice that many under its roof.
It was constructed as a genuine, geodesic dome with hundreds of Douglas fir beams and over a hundred miles of pine decking. Its unique, architectural integrity makes the Dome capable of withstanding extreme Marquette winters. If you have the opportunity to attend a Dome sports event, or even just to tour the Superior Dome, it is well worth a visit.
