The Marquette Harbor Lighthouse – Marquette Michigan Attractions

The Marquette Harbor Lighthouse is rich with history and was instrumental in the development of the iron ore trade in the Great Lakes region.

A thriving community sprang into existence because of the natural harbor at the foot of Marquette Bay, with wharves and docks appearing in support of the iron ore trade, Marquette’s primary early industry. The Lighthouse (originally built in 1853) was installed to guide maritime traffic and bring vessels safely into the harbor.

Situated on a rocky peninsula protruding from the shoreline between Presque Isle and Marquette, this historical lighthouse, the oldest significant structure in the city, is one of the most picturesque of the hundreds of lighthouses on Lake Superior.
